Hey everyone, The speaker at our last meeting, Derrick Smith from the Wisconsin Institute of Discovery, spoke about race and how recent events in the world are not new occurrences, they are a continuation of decades of inequality and inequity. One piece of advice that Derrick gave us was that after conversations with others, he'll think about how the conversation was perceived and why he chose to use certain phases/terms to communicate his message. Much of how we communicate is based on the experiences we have, the way we grew up, and the reference circle we draw examples from. If our background and experiences shape the way we interact with others, it's important to have a broad range of experiences in our life. I'm proud to be in Rotary because we get to partake in diverse experiences and hear from a range of speakers that help provide variety to broaden our background. Our speaker for the upcoming club meeting, Lydia Marszal, has broadened her background by participating in an outbound youth exchange to Taiwan. Join us on Sunday to hear about her experience abroad.
