Hello fellow Rotarians,

February 23, 2020 marks 115 years since the founding of Rotary by Paul Harris in a downtown office building in Chicago, Illinois, on February 23, 1905. Paul wanted to create a professional group representing the friendly smiles and small-town values he had known in his youth. As their club expanded through countries and across continents, the name Rotary International was finally adopted in 1922. Now, over one hundred years later, World Peace and Understanding Day on February 23rd marks the founding of one of the largest philanthropic organizations in the world.

Early Rotarians were instrumental in championing the United Nations as a viable alternative to war, so much so that 49 Rotarians helped draft the United Nations Charter. “It is true that the way to war is a well-paved highway and that the way to peace is still a wilderness,” said Harris in 1949. Rotary International has been a non-religious, non-political, non-partisan organization from the very beginning. Women were finally allowed to join Rotary International in 1987 after a ruling by the US Supreme Court, and today about 18% of members worldwide are members. Our After Hours Club is nearly 50% women (13 men, 12 women).

I urge all of us to keep the 4-way test in mind as we celebrate in February, whether it’s Galentine’s Day, Valentine’s Day, or World Peace and Understanding Day. Building goodwill and better friendships is always the right thing to do!

See you on Sunday,

Erin Luken

2019-2020 President
