Welcome to another issue of our weekly bulletin! Find out who our upcoming speakers are, what our club members are up to, and when to join us in service and fellowship!

Successful September…and on to October

A big “thank you” to all who helped make September a fun and successful month for our club! We covered 26 shifts for Ironman Wisconsin and earned another Community Grant from the Ironman Foundation. We also hosted our most successful volleyball tournament to date, rasing over $1400 from team registrations and prizes. The money from these events will go towards our annual Kids Against Hunger event in February 2027.

As we enter October, we have our regularly scheduled club meetings as well as volunteer opportunities. Please read below for details about joining us to prepare dinner for the famlies at the Ronald McDonald House on October 18.

Volunteer Together at the Ronald McDonald House

We'll be preparing a dinner at the Ronald McDonald House from 4-6pm on Sunday, October 18th, and we are seeking up to 8 volunteers.  Feel free to email menu suggestions to Mac, and he will coordinate bringing our ingredients for dinner meals for about 35 people.  And feel free to bring guests!

Many families travel far from home for their child’s medical treatment, spending weeks, months, and sometimes more than a year to remain by their side. That’s a long time to keep families apart. For children facing a severe medical crisis, nothing seems scarier than not having mom and dad close by for love and support.

The Ronald McDonald House is a “home away from home” so families can stay close to their hospitalized child, and providing families with the comfort and warmth of a home-cooked meal after a long day at the hospital is a simple gift.

World Polio Day

What is World Polio Day?

Every year on 24 October, we observe World Polio Day to raise awareness of the importance of polio vaccination to protect every child from this devastating disease, and to celebrate the many parents, professionals and volunteers whose contributions make polio eradication achievable.

To ensure a polio-free future for everyone, efforts must continue to maintain high immunization coverage, implement high-quality surveillance to detect any presence of the virus, and prepare to respond in the event of an outbreak.

Where is wild polio virus (WPV) found?

WPV is still causing paralysis in Afghanistan and Pakistan, with 39 total cases so far this year. The 35 cases in Afghanistan is the most since 2020. Vaccine-derived cases can still be found in several countries, including Nigeria, the DRC, Chad, South Sudan, and Ethiopia.

What is Rotary doing to End Polio Now?

Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 45 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever.

Rotary's first polio project was to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. Inspired by that successful vaccination campaign, Rotary went on to become a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988, which has reduced polio cases around the world by 99.9 percent.

Thanks to the generosity and commitment of our members, Rotary has contributed more than US$2.9 billion in PolioPlus grants and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 3 billion children in 122 countries from this disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $11 billion to the effort.
